Covesea Skerries Lighthouse – A Beacon of History
Standing proudly since 1846, Covesea Skerries Lighthouse is a testament to Scotland’s maritime heritage. Designed by Alan Stevenson, a member of the renowned Stevenson family of engineers, the lighthouse was constructed to guide ships safely through the hazardous waters of the Moray Firth. At 36 metres tall, it was equipped with a Fresnel lens that had a range of 24 nautical miles, flashing every 20 seconds to alert sailors of the perilous coastline .
The lighthouse remained operational until 2012, when it was decommissioned following the installation of a North Cardinal buoy in the Firth. Now a Category A Listed Building, it is owned and maintained by the Covesea Lighthouse Community Company, a Scottish Registered Charity .
